emgc reblogged your post: Stupid Questions People Ask Me About My Diet

in non-gluten people’s defense, some really random ass foods contain gluten that i am often surprised to find out about….

So true! For example, for the longest time I was under the impression that Kellog’s Rice Krispies were GF, mainly because it boldly says “RICE” on the front of the box. Not too long ago, I was browsing the cereal aisle of my local grocery store, and I noticed that Kellog’s had changed the box. When I looked at the new box, it said “Now Gluten Free”. What? So I picked up an old box, and there was barley malt in the ingredients.

Red Lobster

December 28, 2011

Earlier this year, I went to a local Red Lobster with some friends for lunch. Upon arriving, I handed the waiter my GIG (gluten intolerance group) card and asked for a GF menu and he told me that he’d be right back with it. When he arrived back at our table, he told me that he couldn’t find the GF menu and instead gave me a printout of every menu item and the allergens it contains. The printout was long, about 4 pages of smaller-than-normal spreadsheet. After looking through, I ordered what I believed to be completely GF, and when I asked the waiter to double check my choices, he told me that he thought they were. Some time passes before I get my meal, and when it came, half of what I ordered was breaded and fried. Breaded and Fried. What? After drilling it into him that I can’t eat anything fried, breaded, coated, etc… he still brought me food that would literally make me sick for the rest of the day. I sent it back, and he brought me food that wasn’t breaded, but I had no way of knowing if they had used the same plate, if they had just scraped off the breading, or what they had done behind closed doors in the kitchen. I ate it, and later that day, I had a stomachache. It wasn’t severe, but it was enough for me to know that I had consumed something with gluten in it, most likely my fish at Red Lobster.

And to add to everything else, the waiter was extremely rude and was seemingly blaming the food mix up on me, when it clearly wasn’t my fault.

Stupid Questions People Ask Me About My Diet

butterfliesonmywrists:

“Are nuts gluten-free?”

“Can you have whole-wheat bread?”

“Have you ever had cake?”

“Does this mean you can’t have pizza?”

“If it doesn’t make you vomit, why don’t you just eat ‘normal’ food?”

“What’s in ketchup/mayonaise/salad dressing that you can’t have?”

Noes :(

December 28, 2011

all-we-know-is-distance:

So I’ve been eating (quite a lot) of dry roasted peanuts today since I got back from the hospital, peanuts that I was told were bought for me. I’ve eaten so many today, like half a giant bag.

This past hour I’ve started getting really bad stomach ache and that unfortunately flicked a switch in my brain. So I go to check the packet of nuts and the ingredients.

Contains Gluten.

It’s my own fault for not checking, but oh man, I think I’m gonna suffer badly for this :(

We can’t guarantee it?!?

December 8, 2011

petitelivre:

So as a coeliac going to a restaurant I am very aware that I’m a difficult customer. But when I ask “do you do a gluten free option?” and get the utter bull shit response of “We can’t guarantee it” I have to question what kind of society we live in where we can’t be guaranteed of what’s in our food.

Sort it out, it isn’t just me I’m sure.
